The Path to Permanency

Marla*, a licensed foster parent, was motivated to follow in the footsteps of her biological mother to create a nurturing space where foster youth impacted by trauma could heal. Marla became licensed through the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition in 2024 and immediately took placement of a teenage boy.

Marla leaned on her training from the Coalition, and was able to recognize that the teen was in crisis. Marla reached out to her Coalition Family Development Specialist, Katina, for support. Katina recommended that Marla attend the Coalition’s higher-level training course and also referred her to our Educational Advocacy program.

Due to Marla’s immediate follow-up, the family successfully navigated a crisis that could have disrupted the placement. This demonstrated Marla’s commitment to stability and her ability to provide a supportive environment with the intent of meeting the child’s needs. When the Coalition was asked to provide emergency placement for a different older youth, Katina knew exactly whom to call. It did not take long for Marla and the new teen to develop a trusting relationship. Marla brought much-needed consistency, understanding, and emotional support to the youth’s life, which had been previously shaped by instability and neglect. For the first time, the youth felt seen and valued. Marla’s unwavering support created a safe space where trust could flourish and hope could take root.

Recently, Marla welcomed an additional child—the brother of the second teen. The reunification of these siblings is a testament to Marla’s dedication to fostering family connections. Watching their family grow is heartwarming, showing that with the right resources and commitment to stability, foster parents like Marla can create lasting, positive changes in the lives of children impacted by separation, loss, and grief.

The reunion of these brothers marks a beautiful and meaningful milestone in their journey. After years apart, the brothers are now able to reconnect and share a home again, thanks to Marla’s dedication and care. Their story highlights their resilience, and ability to attach successfully when provided with the right environment. The love they’ve found in Marla’s home is a powerful reminder of the difference a supportive foster parent can make in the lives of children seeking a forever home.

Marla’s home is not just a refuge, but a place where broken hearts mend, and new dreams have possibility. Marla and her three boys are now on the path to adoption.
